First Generation Model 40

This first generation version introduced in1939 has a center-mounted curved finger bail. Three flat  uprights connect the top horizontal  ring to the bottom of the globe enclosure. The  top is secured with a latch assembly built into the upright. [E1L] Note  that the end of the bail is not secured - over time the loop "opened up".   As with most lanterns, bright tin was replaced by enamel (red was standard) over  terne plate as World War II progressed.

The latch assembly, while pretty, was somewhat difficult to use, particularly  for someone with large hands or wearing gloves. It was changed to a more  utilitarian clamp [E1C] and at about the same time the loop on the bail  was secured.
